Meet the Founder
Haylie started Oceans of Opportunity because, from a young age, she saw the lack of support and long-term opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Some of her best friends have disabilities, and their caregivers would often ask her, “What will happen to them when I’m gone?” She grew tired of hearing that question without having an answer.
With her Galveston roots and a deep love for the ocean and its healing power, Haylie decided it was time to build something that would make a lasting difference. She wanted to create opportunities for individuals with disabilities to experience independence and belonging, along with the peace, joy, and freedom the ocean brings.
By God’s grace, Oceans of Opportunity was born, with a vision of creating a living community for adults with disabilities that empowers their abilities and helps them navigate independence.
Meet the Board
Michelle Groogan- President
Tammy Borsellino- Secretary
Ashley Gillespie- Program Development
Maggie Moody- Community Outreach
Our board members are long-term residents of Galveston County and the surrounding area who come to this work from different places. Michelle is the mother of an adult son with autism. Tammy is the sibling of an adult with additional needs. Ashley is a child development specialist who supports autistic children and their families. Maggie is a special education teacher.
As parents, siblings, and professionals, we each see disability from a different angle. What we share is a commitment to teens and adults with differences, and to building a place in our community where they can connect, grow, and belong.
